WHALE BEACH
The proposed house at a site in Whale Beach was to be built into the hillside. A bulk excavation to a maximum depth of 11 metres was required in a landslip area close to neighbouring buildings. The geotechnical investigation indicated that the excavation would encounter clay profile over interbedded sandstones and shales of variable and often poor strength. In order to reduce the risks associated with the excavation, the hill slope was supported by an anchored soldier pile wall with shotcrete infill panels. The concrete soldier piles were installed prior to excavation commencing and the shotcrete and anchors were installed as excavation progressed. Both temporary and permanent anchors were used with the temporary anchors destressed once the house structure had been constructed to a stage where it could provide the required intent.
