North Turramurra Recreation Area (NTRA)

The North Turramurra Recreation Area (NTRA) has recently opened to the public. JK Geotechnics have been closely involved in the design and construction phases of this project since 2009. Ku-ring-gai Council engaged JK Geotechnics to complete a number of geotechnical investigation for all facets of the NTRA development, including deep cored boreholes, multi-level VW piezometer installations and monitoring, test pits, and landfill gas monitoring. For design of the slope stabilisation works, JK Geotechnics also completed rainfall, seepage, stability and retaining wall computer based analyses. Stabilisation of the landfill slopes included the construction of Gabion walls, a 60m long contiguous pile wall, and a stabilising berm.

JK Geotechnics completed regular inspections and provided advice during construction in relation to earthworks, impact rolling, capping layer design, new landfill cells, and rectification/stabilisation of numerous slip and erosion features. For one aspect of the project, full time inspections by a geotechnical engineer were completed for a period of over 18 months. The project is ongoing.

Our earthworks inspection and testing division, Soil Test Services Pty Ltd (STS) also completed Level 1 and Level 2 control services for the duration of the works.

The NTRA development included reconfiguring and extending the existing golf course into the former landfill area, as well as the creation of new playing fields, lighting towers, car parks and buildings.

The NTRA encompasses the existing North Turramurra Golf Course and the former landfill on its eastern side. The former landfill contains three significant fill slopes which are up to 50m high. Since their construction, instability had occurred on these landfill slopes. JK Geotechnics have been monitoring the fill slopes since 1999.
