EQUIPMENT
- One JK500 rotary hydraulic rig mounted on a 4 wheel drive Hino truck base. Standard equipment load includes:
30 NW rods, 24m 110 spiral augers 24M NW casing, 3m and 1.5m NMLC core barrels, SPT/U50, 1000 litre water tank.
The rig is capable of drilling to depths greatly in excess of the standard equipment load and can drill inclined boreholes. HQ wireline equipment, hollow flight augers (75mm ID) and 150mm solid flight augers are available on request.
- One JK350 rotary hydraulic rig mounted on a mid-sized truck. This rig was purpose built to enable access to restricted sites and where headroom is restricted (the mast height is 6.15m). Standard equipment load includes:
30 NW rods, 22m AW rods, 24m 110 spiral augers 24M NW casing, NMLC core barrels, SPT/U50 equipment.
The rig can drill inclined boreholes and is capable of diamond coring as well as auger drilling to depths well in excess of the standard equipment load, however, a support vehicle carrying the extra equipment is required.

- One JK300 hydraulic rig mounted on a 4 tonne rubber tracked crawler chassis. This rig was purpose built in 2005 to enable a full range of drilling and testing to be carried out on difficult access sites or where headroom is restricted (the mast height is 6.1m). The rig offers similar drilling capabilities to the truck mounted 350 rig. The rig is transported by a truck with ramp facilities. Extra time must be allowed for loading and unloading (normally about 1 hour per day). Standard equipment includes:
20 NW rods, 10m AW rods, 10m 110 spiral augers
20M NW casing, NMLC core barrels, SPT/U50 equipment.
- One JK250 rotary hydraulic rig mounted on a 3 tonne rubber tracked crawler chassis. This rig was purpose built in 2002 to enable a full range of drilling and testing to be carried out on difficult access sites or where headroom is severely restricted (the mast height can be as little as 3.4m) The rig is self powered and has a hydraulic rotary drive system identical to the JK350. The rig is transported by a truck with ramp facilities.
The rig can carry a limited amount of equipment to the drill site but additional equipment can be transported by various means depending on access. The rig is capable of coring with NMLC equipment to 40m+ and auger drilling to 20m+. It is important to specify how much equipment is required when booking the rig. Extra time must be allowed for loading and unloading (normally about 1 hour per day).
- One Ezi-Probe drill rig AV47TT mounted on a 3 tonne Toyota Landcruiser 4 x 4 wheel drive chassis. Offers a Direct Push Hammer and Auger Head in a small compact package able to go almost anywhere, as total width is only 1.90m. Capable of spiral auger drilling to 15m and push-tube sampling to 15m. Diatube equipped for concrete coring.
- One truck mounted Electric Friction Cone Penetrometer (EFCP) rig. This purpose built rig is mounted on a 6x4 bogie drive Mercedes Truck. The hydraulic system is capable of providing thrust in excess of 15t ensuring the cone is able to penetrate dense sand layers. Refusal is taken at 50MPa tip pressure. Operating depth is currently up to 50m-60m but can be extended. Standard and piezocone tips are available. Data is continuously recorded digitally and downloaded to specialist interpretation software. Dissipation testing is also available on request.
All standard drilling equipment is carried for site investigation drilling including hand augers and Scala penetrometers.
Deep cored boreholes can be drilled using HQ wireline techniques: available equipment includes 75m HQ rods and a 3m HQ core barrel.
Borehole vane shear test equipment for measuring the undrained shear strength of soft clays to depths in excess of 11m is available. The system incorporates a sophisticated slip coupling system to enable friction losses in the system to be deducted from the applied torque loads.
A single stage HQ pneumatic packer, or for smaller diameter boreholes, a hydraulic packer, for water pressure testing of rock masses.
An electrically powered grout mixer pump unit for sealing of monitoring wells, inclinometers, anchors, etc.
In addition to the geotechnical investigation equipment we also have available a range of specialised equipment for environmental/contamination investigations.
